How to Take Screenshot on HP Laptop (No Extra Software Needed)

Screenshots are ubiquitous because they are incredibly useful in a variety of situations.

It’s an important productivity boosting skill for kids, young and parents to have in our digital-first and visually driven landscape. It’s akin to taking a photograph but in a digital world.

Interestingly, taking screenshots on your HP laptop doesn’t require any special apps or software installations. Windows provides built-in, easy-to-use, and highly effective screenshot capabilities.

A Cautionary Note: Before teaching this skill to children, emphasize the ethical and responsible use of screenshots, as they can be misused for cyberbullying or infringe personal privacy. In a similar stream, guide them on recording evidence of cyberbullying using screenshots as well.

Five Simple Methods to Capture Your HP Laptop Screen

The Classic: Print Screen (PrtScn) Key

  • Pressing the “PrtScn” key captures a screenshot of your entire screen and copies it to the clipboard (temporary memory).
  • This is the most straightforward method. The “PrtScn” key is usually located in the top row of your keyboard.
  • To save the screenshot, open an image editing program like Paint (or any program that supports pasting images) and press “Ctrl + V” to paste it.
  • Then, save the image using the editing program.

Instant Save: Windows Key + Print Screen:

  • Pressing the “Windows key + PrtScn” simultaneously takes a screenshot of the entire screen and automatically saves it as a PNG file in your “Pictures > Screenshots” folder. This is a quick and efficient method.

Active Window Capture: Alt + PrtScn

  • Pressing “Alt + PrtScn” captures a screenshot of the active window (the window you’re currently using) and copies it to the clipboard.
  • Use “Ctrl + V” to paste it into an image editor.

Precision Snips: Windows Key + Shift + S

  • This shortcut opens the Windows Snip & Sketch tool, which allows you to capture specific areas of your screen. A benefit that other method lacks.
  • Pressing “Windows key + Shift + S” will dim your screen, and a small toolbar will appear at the top.
  • Choose your preferred snipping mode:
    • Rectangular snip: Draw a rectangle around the desired area.
    • Freeform snip: Draw any shape around the desired content.
    • Window snip: Click on a specific window to capture it.
    • Fullscreen snip: Capture the entire screen.
  • After making your selection, the screenshot is copied to your clipboard.
  • Paste it wherever you need it.

Using HP Command Center (If Available)

Some HP laptops have additional shortcuts through the HP Command Center:

    1. Check if your laptop has the HP Command Center installed
    2. Open the application and look for screenshot options
    3. Follow the specific instructions for your model

These methods are built into Windows, eliminating the need for any additional software.

Troubleshooting Guide

If the Print Screen key doesn’t seem to work:

  • Try using Fn + Print Screen as some HP laptops require this combination
  • Make sure you’re pasting into an application that accepts images
  • Check your Pictures folder to see if screenshots are being saved there automatically
  • Restart your computer if the feature seems unresponsive

Why Built-in Methods Are Superior:

  • No Additional Software: Eliminates the need for third-party downloads.
  • Seamless Integration: Works flawlessly with your Windows operating system.
  • Enhanced Security: Reduces the risk of downloading potentially harmful software.
  • Accessibility: These tools are available on all windows computers.
